Guards Music
Music was very important to the Army of the 18th century. Not only was it used for marching and entertainment but it was used as a form of communication. Instructions such as loading of weapons and cease fire could be played on the drums. Also just as equally important was the fifes.
The uniforms of the musicians stood out from the rest of the regiment. The colors of the coats in many regiments were the reverse. So if your regiment wore red coats with yellow facings your musicians coats were yellow with red facings. The guards musician's coats colors were not reversed but were embellished with yards of lace sewn onto them. As you will see in the pictures the coats were quite nice.
